Joeckel was competing this spring to take over for Johnny Manziel. Joeckel will be immediately eligible at the school he transfers to because he already has graduated.

Joeckel, a 6-4, 240-pound senior and twin brother of former Aggies offensive tackle Luke Joeckel (the No. 2 overall pick last year by the Jacksonville Jaguars), saw action in five games last season, completing 22 of 37 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns.

Sophomore Kenny Hill and early enrollee Kyle Allen had emerged as frontrunners this spring to replace Manziel.

Sumlin wasn’t expected to name a starter until fall practice in August and it’s unclear if this will change his timeline. He’s been mostly non-committal in his comments on the quarterbacks this spring.

The Aggies won’t have a spring game, either, because of ongoing renovations at Kyle Field.
