It was a very special atmosphere playing in the amphitheater with all the candles lit up, It was a mixture of dramatic, romantic and Arabian Nights. It felt very much alive. I really enjoyed it.” … Federer
Every year we have done something special in Doha and this is a very, very beautiful place,” … Nadal
Defending champion Federer has been drawn to meet his 2011 final opponent, Nikolay Davydenko in the 1st round. He won his 3rd title here last year by defeating the Russian 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Nikolay is currently ranked No.41 and he has a 2-15 head to head record against the Swiss. This is what Roger felt about his chances this week at Doha
“There is a bit of pressure on my shoulders being the defending champion, But I’ve been in this situation many times before, so I hope it goes well. It’s strange to have played him in the final last year and now the first round this year, But other players also have tough draws. Knowing Davydenko’s potential, that he’s been a very consistent Top 4 player for many years, it makes him dangerous … I am feeling good. I had a great end to the season last year and I usually have a good start to the next season as well, Then again, the player field is really tough here. Like in past years, Doha is able to get the top players to come.”
Elsewhere, two other ATP World Tour 250 tournaments are also getting underway today – the Brisbane International in Australia, and the Aircel Chennai Open in India. World No.4 Andy Murray is the top seed at Brisbane while World no.9 Janko Tipsarevic is the top seed in Chennai.
The season is underway in full swing. It is only going to get better in the coming weeks.
